MRF began in Madras — now Chennai — in 1946, took its name from the Madras Rubber Factory, and moved into tyre manufacture in the early 1960s. It has grown into the largest tyre manufacturer in India by turnover, with multiple plants across the country, and it remains an independent Indian company rather than part of a foreign group.

MRF is an independent manufacturer with its own product development, compounding and testing. GB Tyres supplies its truck, agricultural and construction ranges to trade customers.
